music - performance
I play flute, piccolo and alto flute (and other instruments to varying standards) and all sorts of styles of music.
Recent work has included collaborating on Sheffield-based DJ/producer Yarni's albums, Boro and Pigna, playing in the pit for shows at Sheffield's Crucible and Lyceum theatres and recording sessions in various genres, including musical theatre and dance/ electronica. In the last few years I've performed with St Matthew's Orchestra, rarescale Flute Academy, the National Flute Orchestra and the Platform 4 contemporary composers’ ensemble. I also perform as a duo with Tim Knight on piano, harpsichord and organ. I'm a member of Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra.

music - teaching
I teach flute (plus fife, piccolo, alto flute, bass flute and recorder) and music theory.
My approach to teaching is to bring all the ideas that I've gathered from my own learning and use them to give my students the tools to experiment and find out what works for them. My teaching is very 'adaptive' - I'm very efficient when it comes to organising my diary but I'm not big on lesson planning. I spend lots of time thinking about what my students need and want, then 'play it by ear' in lessons, responding to what comes up on the day. I love it when a student brings me a new idea - "I want to learn this song" or "I wondered what happens if I...".
I believe that it's never too late to learn, and it's never too early to start playing with other people. I love seeing students sharing their music at our regular student concerts.
I've written some flute duets for teaching and an audience participation arrangement of 'Ten Green Bottles', suitable for all ages, which premiered at the Classical Sheffield Festival in 2019. These are available for purchase (instant download).

music - ensembles & events
I run ensembles and organise events for musicians.
Sheffield Flute Choir is a relaxed group for adult flute players which meets monthly to rehearse - and to have lots of tea and cake - and performs at events in and around Sheffield, including fundraising concerts for charities and collaborations with other ensembles. I also organise small groups for beginners to build their confidence playing in an ensemble. I organise workshops with visiting tutors to help musicians explore different perspectives on playing and benefit from expertise in different areas - in 2020 I launched ad agio workshops, a series of online and in-person sessions on physical and mental wellbeing for musicians.
I can help you run a successful in-person or online event - find out more.
